Oleg Butkevich was ordained a priest in 2000 after graduating from the Higher Theological Seminary in Grodno. He performed the duties of vicar and rector in the parishes of Novopolotsk, Miory, Beshenkovichi and Ulla, St. Anthony of Padua in the regional center, and headed the deanery (an integral part of the diocese) of Vitebsk-northern.
In 2013, the then Bishop of Vitebsk Vladislav Blin resigned for health reasons, and Pope Francis appointed Oleg Butkevich as the new head of the diocese. The ordination (inauguration, ordination) of the hierarch took place in the Church of the Merciful Jesus in Vitebsk on January 18, 2014.
